Mason Greenwood landed a prestigious individual award at Marseille, with the former Manchester United striker named Ligue 1 Player of the Month.

The England international, who has just one cap and could yet switch allegiance at senior level to Jamaica, received the award thanks to his performances in December. The 23-year-old winger finished 2024 in style, with a return to form.

Greenwood ended a four-game drought in mid-October and hasn’t looked back. In eight appearances until the end of the calendar year, he found the net five times. He has since taken his tally for the entire campaign to 12 in all competitions.

Greenwood explodes

Two of Greenwood’s efforts came in December, the first being a nerveless last-minute penalty in a 2-1 win over Monaco. He also scored in a 2–0 win at Saint-Etienne. He held off competition from Lille’s Canadian striker Jonathan David and Lyon’s highly-rated midfielder Rayan Cherki to be named player of the month.

Greenwood has become a valuable presence for Marseille following his £27m ($33m) move from Old Trafford in the summer of 2024. His price is reportedly rising, with leading European clubs – including the La Liga giant Barcelona – apparently keeping a close eye on his development.
