One of the most, if not the most, popular stars on the independent wrestling scene is former WWE Intercontinental Champion, Matt Cardona.

The self-proclaimed Death Match King has said it’s not his goal to sign with WWE or AEW, but has teased if and how it could happen as Matt Cardona instead of Zack Ryder.

Cardona recently discussed what his plans would be if he didn’t end up in either of the two promotions. While speaking to Scott Fishman for SEScoops, Matt Cardona shared that if he does not sign with WWE or AEW, he would reinvent himself and also work towards reinventing the entire independent scene.

“I feel like I’ve done all there is to do on the Independents. But everything happens for a reason. And I won’t sacrifice everything I’ve built. So, if I… If it doesn’t make sense to go to WWE or AEW, then I will just reinvent myself and reinvent the whole goddamn Independent wrestling scene. That’s what I am going to have to do. Because I’m not… Listen, I’m so grateful for everything that I have accomplished. I’m grateful for my time in WWE, grateful for the highs and lows. But I am not finished yet. Not even close. I have so much left in the tank. Bodywise, creatively wise… Yeah.”

Matt Cardona is excited as the wrestling business is the hottest it’s ever been

The Indy God also mentioned that the wrestling business is very hot right now and he is excited for what 2025 brings to him.

“That’s why being injured sucks so bad because like, I just want to be in there. But it’s also good for me to kind of rethink some things, right? And plan some things out. But I’m very excited for the next couple of months to see what happens for me. As just… The wrestling business keeps changing. This is the hottest it’s been since I’ve been in the business. I started 2003. So, I miss that Attitude Era as a professional wrestler. Of course, watching as a fan.

“So, I’ve been through it all. And this is the hottest it’s ever been. Independence, in my opinion, they are the hottest they’ve ever been There is literally wrestling whether it’s on TV or streaming service or you go to your local venue, every single night of the week, if you want to consume wrestling, that’s unbelievable. It’s never been like that. So, 2025 is gonna be a very fun year for Matt Cardona. We’ll see where I end up,” Matt Cardona said.
