Matt Cardona believes he proved his fans right following his TNT Championship match with Adam Copeland on AEW Collision.

The Indy God Matt Cardona was a recent guest on the Battleground Podcast. When asked about answering The Cope Open to challenge Adam Copeland for the TNT Championship and if he’d do anything different, Cardona joked that he’d try to win the match.

“Well, I’d try to f*cking win,” Matt Cardona joked. “I mean, I did try to win, but I did not win. But that night was such a spur-of-the-moment deal. And just that entrance, you know, having that entrance kind of made these four years worth it in the sense of like, I never wanted to prove anybody wrong, like okay, if I do great, right, but that wasn’t the mission.

“The mission wasn’t to prove anybody wrong. It’s about proving myself right and my fans right, and when I heard literally holy shit chants during my entrance? I said you know what? I think I proved myself right; I think I proved my fans right. And I got goosebumps right now just talking about it because it was a dream match that I thought I would never get.

“I thought when he retired — well, first, we’re the Edgeheads, we have the big match at WrestleMania, Edge vs. Undertaker Hawkins and Ryder do a run-in, and that’s WrestleMania 24. I was just so naive because everything was just clicking for us. I’m like, next year, we’ll probably do a triple threat, Edge vs. Hawkins vs. Ryder. No, the next year, Hawkins and Ryder are lumberjacks in the pre-show tag team match.

“So I thought, oh man, and then Edge had to retire, and like, I’m never gonna have the match. Then he comes back to WWE. I get fired from WWE. Alright, are we ever gonna have this match? Then he’s in AEW. It could possibly happen here because AEW, that Forbidden Door, they let anybody in if the opportunity is right. And The Cope Open was there, and I accepted. It was just literally a dream come true.

“And I have never watched the match back because I know how I felt that night and in that moment. I don’t want to watch it back and critique stuff that I could have done differently. I just want to remember that night. The feeling as I felt it in that moment. But once I get a taste of it, man, I would love a round two.”
