Matt Riddle became a controversial name in WWE because of his problematic actions outside the squared circle, leading to his release. This is especially true for his time working with Randy Orton. He might not be part of WWE anymore, but that doesn’t mean Riddle didn’t make memories there and Riddle has now revealed how he once angered Roman Reigns over a promo.
Before Randy Orton took a break due to injury, he and Matt Riddle formed the tag team known as Team RKBro. Winning tag team championships together, they became notable highlights on WWE television.
While speaking to TheBubbaArmy, Matt Riddle shared that his issues with Roman Reigns started when he was advised to promote RK-Bro’s success and trash-talk the Bloodline in a promo. During the promo, Riddle pointed out RK-Bro’s merchandise sales and claimed that he could beat the Bloodline in a match, including Reigns, despite his status as Tribal Chief.
“Roman would talk to me for like a month or so. The promo was, you know, RK-Bro was killing it, and the guy who set up the interview beforehand told me to mention how RK-Bro was killing it in merchandise and how we were the best team, better than the Bloodline, since Randy and I were feuding with them. So, I talked trash, saying RK-Bro was selling more t-shirts and got into the merchandising numbers and all that. If we got into a cage or a ring, I’d beat the brakes off everybody in the Bloodline. I don’t care if you’re the Tribal Chief or whatever.”
Reigns took offense, and Riddle received a text from Randy Orton saying that his comments were unprofessional. Feeling the need to apologize, Riddle wrote a message expressing regret for crossing a line but also mentioned that he could still beat Reigns in real life. Orton advised him that Reigns would not appreciate such a message and suggested a different kind of apology which was more of a rib, which Riddle then sent.
Despite this, Reigns remained upset, and when Riddle encountered him at a Live Event, Reigns ignored him and, as he walked away, called him a b*** from a distance. Riddle confronted Reigns about this behavior, feeling that it was unnecessary given his apology.
”Then Randy, because Roman was mad at me, sent me a text saying that what I did was unprofessional. I thought I should probably apologize, so I wrote an apology saying it was my bad, I was kind of told to talk trash, and I didn’t mean to cross a line, but I could beat him up in real life. I showed the text to Randy, and he said, ‘Oh no, dude is not going to like that. You don’t want to talk to him like that.’ Randy gave me a non-apology apology, which was very much a Randy apology. When I sent that to Roman, he got angry.
I said, ‘I’m sorry, bro. My bad, dude. It won’t happen again.’ Randy was like, ‘Things happen, hopefully we can work in the future.’ The next time I saw Roman was at a Live Event, right when we were coming back from COVID. I said, ‘What’s up, Roman?’ but he didn’t say a word and just walked by. It was awkward. As we were walking past each other, he didn’t respond, but about five or ten steps away, I heard him call me a b****. I thought, ‘Come on, man, you can’t put me out like that. I’ve got to do something about that.’ I said, ‘I’m right here,’ but he kept walking. The next day, he did it again. I was like, ‘Come on, dude, this is not a big deal. I said I was sorry. Don’t be calling me a bitch and walking away.’ I would have said I was sorry.”
Eventually, due to the success of RK-Bro, Riddle ended up working with Reigns in tag matches and later had a singles match for the title on SmackDown. After this, their working relationship improved, and Reigns seemed to enjoy their interactions.
”Eventually, RK-Bro did so well that I had to work with Roman. We had some tag matches and then a singles match for the title on SmackDown. After that, we were good, and he enjoyed working with me.”
Matt Riddle also thinks that a reunion with Randy Orton is guaranteed. Riddle might not be part of WWE anymore, but he will always have great memories working with Randy Orton and Roman Reigns, even if he got off on the wrong foot with Reigns at first.
