A Northern group, Arewa Youth for Peace and Security, has accused the governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, of abandoning security in the state.
The accusation is coming amidst reports on social media that the Minister of State for Defence and the immediate past governor of the state, Bello Matawalle “distributed foodstuffs” to the Ado Aliero-led bandits terrorizing residents.
Reacting to the accusation, the group claimed that Lawal exaggerated insecurity during Matawalle’s administration to receive cheap publicity and popularity that propelled him to government, but has now abandoned all the promises he made to the people.
The group argued that as a means of redeeming his administration’s image, Lawal now sponsors mischievous, fabricated and concocted lies against Matawalle to gain cheap publicity and sympathy from the Zamfara people.
Speaking via a statement by its president, Abubakar Hassan Kankia, the group said, “Since Lawal assumed office, he is overwhelmed by the burden of leadership and has no clue on how to tackle banditry in the state.
“It is unfortunate that Governor Lawal who used insecurity in Zamfara State as propaganda to mislead the people during his campaign that he would restore security within his 100 days in office has now abandoned the people to their fate while he junkets across the globe leaving his constitutional duties of providing security and delivery of democracy dividends to citizens.
“As a face-saving device, Lawal is busy squandering public funds, sponsoring mischievous, fabricated and concocted lies against Matawalle to gain cheap publicity and sympathy from Zamfara people.
“Governor Lawal is confused, his clueless administration contributed to the current rise of insecurity in Zamfara State. It is heartbreaking watching video clips on social media where bandits praised him as the state has become a safe haven for them.
“These terrorists now want Lawal to remain in power beyond his tenure as they operate unchallenged.”
