Matthew Modine Boarding Next Legendary ‘Monsterverse’ Movie

Legendary has closed a deal for Matthew Modine to join the cast of the next theatrical feature film in their Monsterverse franchise from director Grant Sputore. 

The Stranger Things and Married to the Mob actor joins Dan Stevens, who is reprising his role as “Trapper,” Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo. Dave Callaham wrote the most recent draft. The sequel will feature several new human characters alongside Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat. 

Last year’s Godzilla x Kong becoming its highest-grossing installment in the Monsterverse at $571.8M worldwide. A decade old, Legendary’s Monsterverse is a cross-platform story universe centering around humanity’s battle to survive in a world facing a catastrophic new reality – the monsters of our myths and legends are real. In addition to the movies –2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the Monsterverse counts north of $2.5 billion at the global box office as well as the AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. In addition the franchise has an inter-connected world of video games, graphic novels, toys and live experiences, it represents epic entertainment on the largest possible scale.

Modine’s credits also include Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winner Oppenheimer, Hard Miles, Miss Virginia and The Martini Shot. He can currently be seen with Robert De Niro in the Netflix original series Zero Day. Upcoming projects include the Amazon original series The Better Sister with Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel and The Protector with Milla Jovovich.
