EXCLUSIVE: Euphoria’s Maude Apatow has set the leads for her feature directorial debut, Poetic License, bringing aboard Andrew Barth Feldman (No Hard Feelings), Cooper Hoffman (Saturday Night), Leslie Mann (This Is 40) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) for the film penned by Raffi Donatich.
Marking the first produced project for Jewelbox Pictures, Apatow’s recently launched production company with longtime collaborator and friend Olivia Rosenbloom, on which we were first to report, Poetic License follows Liz, a former therapist and soon-to-be empty nester, as she becomes the unexpected point of tension between two inseparable best friends and college seniors, Sam and Ari. Liz is forced to reexamine her life as the boys’ friendship unravels in a fierce competition for her affection.
No word on the roles today’s quartet will be playing. Producers include Jewelbox Pictures, Apatow Productions, and Levantine Films.
Perhaps best known for her role as Lexi Howard on HBO’s pop culture sensation Euphoria, Apatow is also known for standout turns in Ryan Murphy’s Hollywood and such films as The King of Staten Island, Other People, This Is 40, Funny People, and Knocked Up. She announced the launch of Jewelbox Pictures, a film and television production company with an eye towards bold and complex human stories, in April. Other films on the company’s slate at present include How to Murder Your Life, based on Cat Marnell’s memoir of prescription drug addiction and self-sabotage, and Emily Rappaport’s Female Friendship, which Apatow has eyed as a potential starring vehicle.
Feldman broke out with his acclaimed turn opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Sony’s sex comedy No Hard Feelings and can currently be seen playing SNL talent coordinator Neil Levy in Jason Reitman’s awards prospect Saturday Night. Other past credits include Noah Baumbach’s White Noise and Netflix rom-com A Tourist’s Guide to Love.
Since breaking out in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, Hoffman has quickly established himself as one of the most in-demand young actors in town with turns in Ethan Hawke’s Wildcat and Reitman’s Saturday Night, where he plays Dick Ebersol, the NBC executive backing Lorne Michaels’ mission of getting the now-iconic late-night sketch series on the air, in spite of all obstacles. Up next, he’ll be seen starring in Lionsgate’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk, Cooper Raiff’s The Trashers opposite David Harbour, and Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex opposite Olivia Wilde.
Apatow’s mother, Mann, is a veteran comedic talent who’s starred in everything from Cha Cha Real Smooth to Blockers, This Is 40 and Knocked Up. Most recently, she signed on to star opposite Anna Faris and Isla Fisher in indie comedy Spa Weekend.
Following memorable turns in Tim Burton’s Dumbo, The Last of Us and Searchlight/Hulu’s coming-of-age drama Suncoast, Parker’s upcoming slate includes Universal’s live-action take on How to Train Your Dragon and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy for the same studio.
Apatow is repped by WME, Mosaic, and Ziffren Brittenham; Feldman by WME and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; Hoffman by CAA and Robert Marshall at Greenberg Glusker; Mann by CAA and Gretchen Rush at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller; Parker by WME, Curtis Brown Group in the UK, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman; and Donatich by UTA and 2AM.
