Former Saturday Night Live cast member Melissa Villaseñor is opening up Owen Wilson‘s time as guest host on the NBC late-night sketch show.
The comedian has impersonated the Wedding Crashers actor on her YouTube channel and sketches for Más Mejor. Villaseñor recalled that when Wilson hosted SNL‘s Season 47 premiere in 2021, she brought up the idea of impersonating him alongside him, but he denied the request.
“He hosted, and I asked him if we could do the Owen impression together,” Villaseñor said on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast. “He was like, ‘I feel like it’s done. I feel like people, it’s over.’ He didn’t want to do it.'”
The story prompted Carvey to remember a dinner with Wilson, Lorne Michaels, and Kevin Nealon, “And it came up in conversation and he didn’t like when people did him, and so I said, ‘Okay, I won’t.'”
Spade also recalled that he “did Owen once,” adding, “I don’t even do Owen that well, but when I hosted, they assigned me Owen.” Spade said his impersonation was “more of a funny look, and I love Owen. We just had Luke [Wilson] on and Luke sounds a lot like Owen. It’s almost just a different tone, but it’s that same cadence.”
Villaseñor impersonated Wilson in a sketch for Más Mejor for the feature “Daily Itineraries” where Wilson “maps out his schedule for the day.”
On Villaseñor’s own YouTube channel, the comedian imagines what a meditation guided by Wilson would be like.
On Just For Laughs, Villaseñor says her favorite impression to do is Owen Wilson’s, which you can watch in the video below starting at the 3:13 mark.
