The transfer window holds surprises every year. Among them as captain and European champion with Manchester City on the FC Barcelona side, Ilkay Gundogan is making his return to the Mancunian club.

The German midfielder officially returns to the Skyblues after a season spent at Barça. He arrives for free at the English champion.

“I’m incredibly happy. Happy to see the team-mates, the staff, people with whom I had great times during these seven years, very successful times. Many ups, some downs, but overall, an incredible experience. When you leave this place like I did last year, you spend a year away from this place, and then you start to appreciate it even more. You realise what you had. You realise how incredible this period was. You realise how big the club is – the best club in the world,” he said on the official website of the Manchester club.

Before continuing: “In terms of football, to be back at this level and come back a year later is an incredible feeling, and I’m very happy. I’m very happy. I feel privileged to share the dressing room with these incredible players again.”

Gundogan wants to win titles

Ilkay Gundogan has won everything he has won at club level, including at Man City. But the midfielder is still hungry for titles and trophies. “I still want to prove myself every day, in training sessions and games, and become the best possible version of myself. I still have an incredible sense of winning, of competing and I think the package you have here, today, you can’t find anywhere else, and that made it very, very easy for me to come back.”
