Metro Board prepares for sufficient supply of piped water in the city

Hyderabad is preparing for the summer water crisis by increasing piped water supply through emergency pumping from dead storage. Emergency pumping will begin at Nagarjuna Sagar on April 15 and at Yellampally on May 1. The government plans to build new water treatment plants to address freshwater issues.

Sudarshan Reddy, managing director of HMWSSB, inspected sites for three new vertical water treatment plants with a capacity of three MLD in Gandipet, Kokapet, and Puppalaguda areas. These plants will treat additional water from Himayat Sagar and Usman Sagar reservoirs. Current water supply sources include Nagarjuna Sagar, Ellampalli, Manjira, Singur, Himayat Sagar, and Usman Sagar.

Due to decreasing underground water levels in the ORR area, the demand for water board tankers has increased. An additional 9 MLDs of water are being supplied in nearby areas like Gandipet, Kokapet, and Puppalaguda. Filling stations will be set up for 24-hour availability of water tankers. The Sunkishala project is expected to be completed by December 2024.

Currently, there are 644 operating tankers providing water supply. On April 2 alone, there were 6,593 trips made by tankers. Most bookings for tankers come from western parts of the city like Manikonda, Gacchibowli, Kondapur, Madhapur, Kukatpally, Jubilee Hills, and Banjara Hills.
