Mickie James offered some advice that was met with a polarizing reaction by the wrestling world.
This week’s episode of WWE LFG saw the Legends continuing to work with their trainees find themselves in the ring. In one exchange, Mickie James critiqued Zena’s choice of ring gear. James said she appreciated Zena branching out with her look. However, she took issue with it being a “revealing” outfit that she compared to women’s lingerie.
James admitted she had to work in an era where that was more widely seen. However, she noted that she worked hard not to wear it in the ring anymore.
“I did like that we saw a new side of you, Zena. I liked your new gear. Can I talk to you about your gear? I lived during the Diva era and we fought very, very hard to not have to wrestle in lingerie anymore. Since I’m a female, I can speak on this,” James said.
“It’s very frustrating when women go out there and wrestle and all I see is their ass, and I can’t look past it and it’s all I see, it’s very distracting,” she continued. “So you want to be taken seriously as a wrestler, but you’re wrestling in pretty much jazzed-up lingerie. And that’s my opinion, and that’s coming from someone who’s had her ass on TV a lot.”

— Sonya Bayley – WWE Fan ?? (@SDevilleLive) March 31, 2025Some fans agreed with James, stating that some female talent’s work can be overshadowed by fans just wanting to sexualize them. Others said James was wrong to speak out, noting that she was critiquing a look that many of today’s top women’s wrestlers choose to adopt themselves.
It’s worth noting that a few people chose to call James a hypocrite, sharing photos of her wearing revealing attire in past matches. However, some fans came to her defense and pointed out Mickie even mentioned she did it herself. As seen in the clip, James said she fought for an era where women didn’t have to do so and now it’s a choice.
One notable response came from former TNA Knockouts Champion Velvet Sky, who said there’s nothing wrong with sex appeal in pro wrestling, no matter what era we’re in. She closed her message with “let the pigeons loose,” a reference to her TNA ring entrance that involved her shaking her butt as she stepped in between the ring ropes.
“I feel attacked! lol nothing wrong with sex appeal in wrestling. Diva era or not,” Velvet Sky wrote on Twitter. “I personally find nothing wrong with her gear. Just my opinion but what do I know? ? Let the pigeons loose, Zena!”
