Microsoft, G42, and OpenAI Join Forces to Enhance UAE AI Sector

Technology giant Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSTR) has inked a strategic partnership with UAE-based prominent Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cloud computing company G42. According to the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence in UAE Omar Al Olama, the collaboration will see the UAE work with Sam Altman’s OpenAI. Notably, this deal follows an initial announcement of Microsoft’s $1.5 billion investment in G42 sometime in April.

When this investment came in April, OpenAI was not revealed as the AI partner for the deal.

Microsoft Makes $1.5B Investment in G42

This fund gave the American multinational corporation a minority state in the AI company. It will also secure it a seat on its board of directors. Precisely, Brad Smith, Microsoft Vice Chair and President, joined G42’s board. Moving forward, the duo will focus on issuing advanced AI solutions with Microsoft Azure. This will focus on various industries and markets across the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa.

In addition, the two companies will support the establishment of a $1 billion fund for developers to boost AI skills in the UAE. For perspective, the fund will be directed towards providing education and skill development. This will boost the cultivation of a robust environment that encourages the sustainability of AI advancement in the long term.

The beneficiaries of the fund will be local talents who require essential resources and training to excel in AI.

The ultimate goal of this strategic partnership is to establish the UAE as a regional leader in the AI space. It marks a significant milestone for the region in its pursuit to improve its AI infrastructure. Some of the challenges that their collaboration is designed to address are data privacy, ethical considerations, and scalable infrastructure.

During an interview, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence emphasized how crucial the collaboration is, citing that it aligns with the UAE’s mission of becoming a global hub for AI innovation.
