A new Miffy animated series will go out on Sky in the UK. The deal comes with the much-loved bunny character celebrating her 70th anniversary this year. Sky Kids has picked up the show from Studiocanal and Superights.

Created by Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna – who first drew the iconic character to entertain his young son whilst on a rainy seaside holiday – Miffy has graced a series of picture books that have sold 85 million copies and are now published in over 50 languages. Bruna’s simple but classic design graces a wide range of toys, clothing and merch, with Mercis holding the global rights.

There have been several Miffy shows and even a movie over the years. The new Miffy CGI toon series was produced by Studiocanal, Mercis and Superprod Animation with pay-TV giant Canal+, which will launch it in France.

Miffy runs to 78 episodes of 7-minutes and is in production. The show sees the young bunny and her chums discovering the world around them as Miffy’s positive attitude helps overcome any tricky situations.

The first eps will deliver this September. The core audience is 3-to-5 year-olds, although Miffy holds wider appeal, with the little rabbit character becoming a Gen-Z favorite in recent years.

Studiocanal and Superights are across international sales. Sky Kids programming is acquired by Lucy Murphy, Director of Kids Content at Sky. The Miffy deal was negotiated by Alexander Wright, Acquisitions Manager, and Alia Morsy, Acquisitions Executive, for Sky Kids.

Imrun Islam, Head of Film and TV Licensing UK & Ireland at Studiocanal, said the Sky team have been “enthusiastic and collaborative since the early start of our discussions,” and added: “The deal heralds a new step for much loved Miffy, marking only the beginning on her way to reach to kids and families worldwide.”

Nathalie Pinguet, Deputy General Manager, Sales & Acquisitions, at Superights said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Lucy Murphy and her amazing team. I feel that the Sky teams are passionate about Miffy and I’m sure they will give her a privileged place in Sky’s line-up.”
