EXCLUSIVE: QC Entertainment, the company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, has completed the Victoria, BC shoot on horror film The Casket Girls with four major additions to the cast: Mike Colter (Evil), Raúl Castillo (Smile 2), Matt Frewer (Perry Mason), and Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!).
As previously announced, Gabrielle Union leads the ensemble. Lennon also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Robert Ben Garant, his partner on Night at the Museum and numerous other projects, with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), who directed the film.
The Casket Girls is inspired by true events involving a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically, with stories of men drained of their blood. The girls were blamed and feared to be demons or vampires. For the city’s protection, the girls were imprisoned in the attic of the Vatican controlled Ursuline Convent, which still stands today in the heart of the French Quarter, locked away behind an impenetrable door and windows bolted shut by nails blessed by the Pope himself.
The film takes place in today’s world as Detective Shay Williams (Union) and her partner Galpin (Colter) become trapped inside the Ursuline Convent with a motley group (including Castillo, Frewer and Lennon) when the Casket Girls escape from their attic prison for the first time in over 300 years.
The Casket Girls will be played by Hazel Bartlett-Sais (Longlegs), Lucia Morris (Nobody Dumps My Daughter), Ana Pacheco (Seed), Talisa Mae Stewart (Are You There?), Haylie Hansen (The Chicken Sisters) and Charlotte Kavanagh (Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies), with Jake Manley (The Order), Carolina Rolo (Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies), and Yari Pernia (Christmas on 5th Avenue) rounding out the cast.
QC Entertainment’s Sean McKittrick and Raymond Mansfield produced, with Union and QC’s Edward H. Hamm Jr. exec producing alongside Jameson Parker of the British Columbia-based Lighthouse Pictures. Atomic Honey handled casting in the U.S. alongside Kris and Kara Casting in Canada.
Best known for playing Luke Cage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Colter recently starred alongside Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg in The Union for Netflix and as David Acosta in the critically acclaimed Paramount+ series Evil.
Coming off of the hit Paramount horror sequel Smile 2, Castillo will next be seen starring alongside Maika Monroe and Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the recently announced remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle from 20th Century Studios.
Since his performance as Max Headroom in the eponymous ABC series, Frewer has become one of the most in-demand character actors, with recent turns in Fear the Walking Dead, Perry Mason and Watchmen.
Recent acting credits for comedic multi-hyphenate Lennon include Animal Control, Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, and Chosen Family.
Colter is repped by CAA, Strand Entertainment, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead; Castillo by CAA, JWM Entertainment Group, and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman; Frewer by Lucas Talent and Gilbertson Entertainment; and Lennon by UTA, Artists First, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
