Mikel Arteta told Arsenal fans not to be “sad” after his team fell agonisingly short in this season’s Premier League title race.

The Gunners won 2-1 against Everton at a hopeful Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

However, that result was not enough to prevent Manchester City from being crowned champions of England for a fourth successive season.

City beat West Ham United 3-1 in Manchester and ultimately finished two points above Arteta’s side.

But Arteta expressed his pride at how the season had gone as he addressed the crowd after full-time in north London.

As quoted by BBC Sport, Arteta said: “All this is happening because you started believing, you started to be patient and started to understand what we tried to do. All the credit has to go to the players and the staff.

“Don’t be satisfied. We want much more than that and we’re going to get it.”

This was Arsenal’s best season in terms of points won since the club’s famous Invincibles campaign of 2003/04.

Meanwhile, the Gunners set a new club record by ending the season with a goal difference of +62 (the same as champions City.

Arteta has been in charge of Arsenal since December 2019.

His side have now finished second in each of the last two seasons – after placing eighth, eighth and fifth in the three campaigns before that.
