Despite the announcement of Sergio Conceição as the new coach of AC Milan, the Lombard leaders had other ambitions for their bench. Another technician, more experienced, was targeted as a priority, but the negotiations were unsuccessful.
The coach in question is none other than Maurizio Sarri, the former coach of Lazio and Juventus. According to Il Corriere dello Sport, the Rossoneri approached Sarri on December 24, on the eve of Christmas, with a contract offer until the end of the season, with an option for a further year. But this offer did not convince the transalpine coach, who was hoping for a longer commitment and guarantees on the sporting project.
Milan targeting seasoned Italian coach
Milan’s decision to initially go with Maurizio Sarri is not surprising. Renowned for his attractive style of play and his convincing results, Sarri marked his time at Naples by taking the club to the Serie A podium three consecutive seasons. He also won a Scudetto with Juventus in 2020, demonstrating his ability to perform at the highest level.
Despite these references, Sarri did not wish to join AC Milan, believing that the duration proposed for his contract did not correspond to his expectations. His refusal led Milanese leaders to intensify their discussions with Sergio Conceição, former coach of FC Porto, who was finally appointed on Monday to succeed Paulo Fonseca.
Conceição, a short-term solution?
Sergio Conceição has signed a contract until June, with an option for another year. This choice demonstrates the urgency for Milan to find a successor to Fonseca, but also raises questions about the club’s long-term vision. Conceição, although having proven his value at FC Porto, will have to quickly convince in a demanding environment like that of Serie A.
While Sarri’s refusal has forced AC Milan to review their plans, it is clear that the club initially had different ideas for the key position. Will Conceição succeed in establishing himself as the man for the job or will Milan continue to look for the ideal profile in the future? Only time will tell.
