The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has constituted a special committee to tackle the frequent boat mishaps on Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.

In a statement, by the Director of Information and Public Relations for the Ministry, Anastasia Ogbonna, on Thursday, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to improving water transport safety and operational standards, calling on stakeholders and the public to support the committee’s efforts.

It stated, “The committee was constituted to address incessant boat mishaps across the country.

“The committee is expected to review and come up with recommendations and actionable plans that would checkmate the menace.

“The committee, chaired by the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, Bola Oyebamiji, also includes Mr. D. Mobereola, Director-General of NIMASA; Prof. S. Abiodun, Executive Director of NIOMR; Dr. A.M. Sule, Executive Director of NIFFR; Dr. B.D. Olaosebikan, Principal of FCFFT; Prof. B. Fakinlede, Technical Adviser to the Minister; and Mr. A. Offie, Deputy Director of Inland Waterways, who serves as Secretary.”

The committee has been tasked with reviewing commercial boat operations to assess the causes of mishaps, compliance with safety and security measures, and boat specifications against acceptable standards.

They are also expected to develop a comprehensive plan to address their findings, establish standard design specifications for commercial boats, and recommend any other necessary measures to create a safer and more viable water transport system.

The committee has 21 days to submit its recommendations to the ministry
