Romy and Michele are getting ever closer to another reunion: In a new interview, Mira Sorvino says a follow-up to the 1997 hit comedy Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion starring herself and Lisa Kudrow is “so close to being greenlit.”

In an exclusive interview with People, Sorvino reports that a deal has been done with a director, and both she and Kudrow are on board as executive producers for a sequel. The original screenwriter Robin Schiff “has written multiple drafts of an amazing funny script, which checks all the boxes for all the fans,” Sorvino says.

In addition to Sorvino and Kudrow returning, Sorvino also confirmed that “Almost every single character from the original that was important is coming back….This is all pending, them making deals, them saying yes, but they’re all in there.”

The sequel could begin shooting in “second quarter next year,” she says.

“But,” Sorvino cautions, “it’s not officially greenlit, so I can’t say that it’s officially greenlit,”

The 1997 comedy was directed by David Mirkin, and featured Sorvino as Romy White and and Kudrow as Michele Weinberger, old friends who return to their 10th High School Reunion in Tucson, Arizona, determined to show up their old school bullies with some made-up successes. Also in the cast were Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Camryn Manheim, Elaine Hendrix and Justin Theroux.

The film has built a devoted following since its initial release.

Sorvino’s latest project is as executive producer of the movie Daft State, starring her husband, the actor Christopher Backus. The film is streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
