Recently crowned Miss South Africa winner, Mia le Roux, has pulled out of the ongoing Miss Universe competition, citing health concerns.
Announcing the development in a statement issued on Friday morning, the Miss South Africa organization disclosed health concerns were behind the reason the beauty queen backed out.
The finale of the global contest will take place on Saturday, 16 November, in Mexico.
The withdrawal means South Africa will not be represented at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant.
“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from SA during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed on me.
“However, I’m deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so I may continue to serve my country with full strength.
“The Miss South Africa Organization also showed its support for Mia’s decision, saying that “her health and well-being are our utmost priority.
“We stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health. Our hearts are with her as she takes the necessary steps toward recovery,” the organization said.
The Miss Universe preliminary competition kicked off on Friday in Mexico City, with previous winners R’Bonney Gabriel of the USA and Sheynnis Palacos of Nicaragua as hosts.
Miss South Africa, Mia Le Roux made history as the first deaf contestant and was among the 120 beauty queens vying for the Miss Universe crown.
Mia Le Roux won Miss South Africa 2024, held at the SunBet Arena in Menlyn, Pretoria, on 10 August 2024, competing against nine other contestants. She had been previously announced as one of the 30 semifinalists in May 2024.
