An aged woman identified as Kehinde Ojo, was on Tuesday lynched by a mob in Oke-Ijeun area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, over an allegation of witchcraft.
In a series of videos that went viral on social media, Ojo, who appeared weak and could not talk, was seen lying inside a pit.
Saturday PUNCH gathered that a prophetess from a white garment church in the area raised the alarm that Ojo transformed from a bird to a human and fell on her church’s roof while she was praying.
The prophetess, whose name could not be ascertained, and other members of the community were seen in the video interrogating the old woman.
Our correspondent further gathered that men of the Ogun State Police Command later rescued the woman and took her to hospital.
But a police source said Ojo later died on Thursday.
According to the source, the old woman died at the state general hospital where she was receiving treatment for injuries sustained from the mob action.
He added that the case had been transferred to the command’s headquarters for investigation.
Narrating the incident to our correspondent, one of the children of the deceased, Kabir Kehinde, accused the prophetess and her son of beating her mother to death.
According to him, his mother lost her way while visiting his brother who lived behind the church on Monday evening, and was attacked by the prophetess.
“My mother was not a witch; she was wrongly accused and beaten to death by the prophetess. My mother had gone to visit my brother on Monday evening and lost her way because she had sight problems.
“The prophetess and others beat her from Monday evening till Tuesday morning. They inflicted injuries on her because they were pestering her to confess to witchcraft.
“Despite her repeated pleas of innocence, they descended on her, beating and accusing her of witchcraft.
“My mother was still bleeding from the injuries even till the day we buried her. We have reported the case to the police and the prophetess has been arrested,” Kehinde said.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Omolola Odutola, said she was not aware of the incident.
