Croatian midfielder Luka Modrić made history today as he became the oldest player to ever play an official match for Real Madrid, surpassing the record previously held by Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskás.
Modrić, aged 39 years and 40 days, took to the pitch in Real Madrid’s 2-1 La Liga victory against Celta Vigo at the Abanca Balaidos, breaking a 57-year record set by Puskás in 1966.
Modrić, who has been a cornerstone of Real Madrid’s success since joining in 2012, continues to defy his age with performances full of poise and precision.
PUNCH Online reports that the Croatian maestro was brought in the 63rd minute for Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde.
Tribuna reports that Puskas set the record at 39 years and 38 days in May 1966. Modric, who turned 39 last month, clocked 39 years and 40 days old as he played against Celta Vigo.
The former Ballon d’Or winner contributed to the victory by providing a key assist for Vinícius Júnior’s second goal in the 66th minute, showcasing his enduring ability to dictate the flow of the game.
Giving an assist, three minutes after coming on to help Madrid reclaim the lead French captain, Kylian Mbappé gave the team in the 20th minute before Williot Swedeberg’s equaliser in the 51st minute.
The achievement comes after a glittering career that has seen Modrić win five UEFA Champions League titles, four FIFA Club World Cups, and the 2018 Ballon d’Or, among other accolades.
Despite his age, Modrić has remained a crucial part of Carlo Ancelotti’s squad, and his appearance today further cements his legendary status at the club.
Speaking after the game, Modrić expressed his gratitude: “It’s an incredible honour to break this record at such a historic club. I’ve worked hard to maintain my fitness and passion for the game, and to still be able to contribute to the team means everything to me.”
Real Madrid fans gave Modrić a standing ovation, a clear sign of their admiration for the Croatian, whose legacy in the club’s illustrious history is now beyond question.
Modrić’s record-breaking appearance is yet another milestone in a career defined by consistency, leadership, and technical brilliance.
As Real Madrid pushes for more silverware this season, their veteran midfielder remains at the heart of their aspirations.
