Mohammed Abu al-Qumsan had just obtained the birth certificates for his newborn twins when he received devastating news that his apartment in Gaza had been bombed, killing the babies and their mother.
The heartbreaking footage of Abu al-Qumsan, clutching the birth certificates while overwhelmed with grief, has spread widely on social media, symbolizing the tragic impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Abu al-Qumsan was at the hospital when he was informed that his home, where his wife, infants, and mother-in-law were staying, had been targeted. Upon rushing to the hospital’s entrance with the birth certificates still in hand, he was told his family was in the morgue. On the same day he named his children, Aser and Aysal, he also had to register their deaths and that of their mother.
With his home destroyed, Abu al-Qumsan now faces the unimaginable loss of his entire family. He lamented that he never got to celebrate the arrival of his children, who never had the chance to wear the new clothes he had bought for them. The dire situation in Gaza has made it difficult for residents to access basic supplies, including the nappies he struggled to find for his children, whose lives were tragically cut short.
