Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke believes the club should part ways with two players, including Harry Maguire.

The 31-year-old joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2019, completing an £80 million transfer from Leicester City. The Englishman found some success at first, but then endured torrid times, especially in recent campaigns. This prompted former Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag to strip him from the captain’s armband and hand it to his teammate Bruno Fernandes.

Nevertheless, the big defender has been enjoying quite a resurgence since the arrival of Ruben Amorim who restored him as a regular starter.

The Portuguese tactician went on to describe him as the perfect player for his three-man backline, especially when it comes to filling the central role.

The England international has recently activated an automatic renewal clause in his contract, thus pushing back the deadline until June 2026.

And yet, Yorke still feels that Maguire has already paid his dues for the Red Devils, so it’s now time for the club to find a younger alternative. Hence, the former Manchester United urges INEOS to offload the defender alongside his Johny Evans.

“Harry Maguire has done his time at Manchester United, he’s been a great player at the club and he’s won trophies in his time.” said Yorke via the Mirror.

“But now, it’s time to turn the page, Man United need to move on from Maguire, and even the likes of Jonny Evans, who I have a lot of respect for. The club needs fresher legs, players like Leny Yoro need to be integrated into the team and Maguire can hold his development back.

The 53-year-old, who won the famous treble with Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999, claims the legendary Scottish manager would have rid himself of players like Maguire had he been in charge.

“Sir Alex Ferguson would have been ruthless in this position, he knew when certain players’ time was up and he would sell Maguire.”
