Last night was a special one for FC Barcelona as they secured a huge 3-2 win over PSG in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.

Amidst all the joy and happiness, there was one note of disappointment for the team, which came due to an ill-advised and distasteful comment made by a pundit on the broadcast.

Former goalkeeper Mono Burgos, speaking on Movistar+ before kickoff in Paris, made a poor comment regarding Lamine Yamal when the Barcelona youngster was warming up and showcased his skills on the ball.

“If he doesn’t do well he could end up in a traffic light,” Burgos had said.

In light of these comments, players from Barcelona and PSG both refused to do post-match interviews with Movistar.

Now, the broadcasters have issued an apology over the ‘unfortunate’ comment made by Burgos, saying:

“On the occasion of the unfortunate comments made by one of the Movistar Plus+ collaborators during the preview of the UEFA Champions League match between PSG-FC Barcelona about FC Barcelona player Lamine Yamal, the platform apologises publicly.”

Movistar Plus+ further stated that they condemn “any kind of discrimination” and has announced that they “will not allow this kind of comments from any of the employees or collaborators linked to the platform.”

“After what happened, the platform will take the appropriate measures to ensure that these events do not happen again,” the Spanish pay-TV platform concluded.

Burgos also apologies

Amidst all the spotlight on La Liga and Spain due to the incidents of racist abuse against footballers, Burgos’ comments were certainly ill-advised and distasteful in nature.

And, Burgos too issued an apology for his comments during the broadcast, saying:

“It was a comment without trying to hurt anyone. If anyone felt offended, I apologise publicly. In these times you have to adapt to everything and that’s what we’re doing,” he said.
