Conspicuously absent from the cable news lineup this AM was Morning Joe, with MSNBC pre-empting the show in favor of NBC News and NBC News Now special reports in the wake of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The show, hosted by Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, is scheduled to return on Tuesday.

CNN, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that the decision was made out of concern a guest “might make an inappropriate comment” that would create a larger backlash against the show and network. But an MSNBC spokesperson denied that characterization, noting that the network has been in breaking news coverage ever since the Trump rally shooting.

Before the shooting at a rally on Saturday, Scarborough and Brzezinski have been highly critical of the former president.

Scarborough posted on X/Twitter on Sunday, “Our family is praying this morning for President Trump, those injured yesterday, and for the loved ones of the American tragically killed. May God grant mercy on them and deliver us from the violent political rhetoric that coursens debate and endangers public servants.

He added, “We should also keep in our prayers Gabby Giffords, Steve Scalise, and Paul Pelosi—who all still suffer from the wounds inflicted upon them by political violence.”

MSNBC had already planned for most of its hosts, including the Morning Joe team and primetime personalities, to anchor coverage of the convention from New York.

Plans have changed for other programming. The Daily Show canceled plans to telecast from Milwaukee, the convention host city, with the Monday show being pre-empted. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is still moving forward with live editions from New York.
