Well-known Nollywood actress and producer, Mercy Aigbe has spoken up about a very personal and emotional period of her life. She describes how her previous mother-in-law’s strong family resistance forced her to become a single mother.

Speaking on Iriri Mi, a program on WasilaCoded TV, Aigbe recounted the struggles that led to the dissolution of her first marriage. She explained that she got married at a young age, shortly after completing her education, and was excited to start a family with her then-husband. However, the marriage soon faced significant challenges, as her husband’s family, particularly his mother disapproved of their union based on ethnic differences.

Despite Aigbe’s efforts to build a happy home, the opposition she faced from her mother-in-law became relentless. The actress recalled feeling unwelcome and constantly battling to prove herself in an environment where she was not accepted. At just 23 or 24 years old, she found herself in a heartbreaking dilemma: endure a marriage filled with hostility and family disapproval or leave in pursuit of her peace and her child’s well-being.

The actress described the emotional and psychological toll the situation took on her. She revealed that she tried to hold on, hoping things would change, but the pressure was overwhelming. Eventually, the frustration and emotional distress became unbearable, forcing her to make a life-altering decision.

“Everyone’s journey is different,” she shared. “After completing my education, I got married and had a child. But my husband’s mother opposed our union, insisting he could not marry a non-Igbo woman. The battles were many, the frustration was overwhelming, and eventually, I had no choice but to leave with my child and raise them on my own.”

Aigbe emphasized that the transition was incredibly difficult, as she was still young and had to navigate life as a single mother while rebuilding her career. Entering the Nollywood industry came with its own challenges, but she remained determined to succeed, knowing she had a child to care for.

Her story sheds light on the complex family dynamics that many women face in marriage, especially when dealing with opposition from in-laws. She highlighted how societal expectations often pressure women to endure difficult marital situations for the sake of appearances, but ultimately, prioritizing one’s happiness and well-being is crucial.

Aigbe’s journey serves as an inspiration to women who find themselves in similar situations, reminding them that leaving a toxic environment is sometimes necessary for personal growth and a better future for their children.
