Manchester United hero Dwight Yorke has encouraged his former club to pursue a bid for Benjamin Sesko, naming the RB Leipzig striker as his ‘ideal signing’ this January.

The Red Devils are actively looking to strengthen in a number of areas after another desperately disappointing start to the season in the Premier League, with Ruben Amorim’s men languishing down in 13th place.

Amorim admitted his team could be the ‘worst’ in United’s entire history in the wake of Sunday’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton and the Portuguese is crying out for reinforcements to help propel his side up the table.

Luke Shaw’s persistent injury problems have forced United to turn to the winter transfer market for cover at left-back, with talks underway to sign Lecce youngster Patrick Dorgu.

Amorim is also pushing to bring in added support and competition for Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in attack and a number of high-profile forwards have been linked in recent weeks.

Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo and Newcastle’s Alexander Isak are both believed to be on United’s shortlist of targets, but Yorke believes the perfect player is currently playing his football overseas.

‘Manchester United don’t need Bryan Mbeumo, he’s another winger, they need another striker,’ the ex-United and Trinidad and Tobago striker told CoinCasino.com.

‘I would love it if Manchester United went and signed Benjamin Sesko, I watched him play recently and he’s a great profile.

‘He’s similar to Alexander Isak but probably cheaper.

‘Sesko has a great presence up front, he’s a big striker with an incredible shot on him. He’s mobile too, which Manchester United need.’

According to Yorke, an integral member of United’s 1999 treble-winning team, the club require a ‘proper No.9’ to fix their problems up front.

‘Sesko would be my ideal signing for Manchester Unitedm’ he added.

‘He’s a proper No.9.’

Sesko, 21, has enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign with RB Leipzig, racking up eight goals and two assists in his opening 17 appearances in the Bundesliga.

The likes of Arsenal and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in Sesko, though Leipzig are determined to keep hold of their prized possession for the second half of the season.

The Slovenia international is tied into contract at Red Bull Arena until the summer of 2029.

Speaking to Slovenian TV channel Arena Sport, Sesko’s agent Elvis Basanovic insisted his client had no regrets about signing a new deal with RB Leipzig back in mid-June.

Asked about Arsenal reportedly sniffing around Sesko this month, Basanovic replied: ‘I think you should ask [Mikel] Arteta about that. But I think Sesko could suit many clubs because he has different football skills.

‘He can play alone in attack, with two strikers, a little further back, he has height, speed, technical speed.

‘We can see that our decision [to stay at Leipzig] was correct, six months later he is already a better striker than he was last season

‘What he lacks is experience. We must not forget that he is only 21 years old, so we did not want him to go to the Premier League in the summer.

‘There were concrete options, but we consciously decided to stay in the Bundesliga to give him time to progress and develop into a better striker.’

Pressed on whether a January move could be on the cards, Basanovic responded: ‘I don’t think Leipzig would be satisfied with any compensation at the moment.

‘Leipzig do not want to sell Benjamin Sesko because they really value him immensely.’
