The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has destroyed counterfeit and expired products valued at over N10bn in the North-East zone.

The public destruction exercise was conducted in Gombe State on Wednesday.

During the event, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by the North-East Zonal Director, Mr. Kenneth Azikwe, emphasised that the agency’s action was a demonstration of its ongoing commitment to safeguarding Nigerian markets from substandard, falsified, and harmful products.

“NAFDAC remains at the forefront of protecting and promoting public health through rigorous standards, innovative practices, and international collaboration,” Adeyeye stated.

The destroyed items, including food, drugs, cosmetics, and other regulated products, were seized by NAFDAC’s regulatory and enforcement officers.

According to Adeyeye, the products could have posed serious health risks to countless individuals if they had entered circulation in the region.

She encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to the agency, emphasising that collective efforts are essential in building a safer and healthier nation.

The Gombe State Coordinator of NAFDAC, James Agada, reiterated the agency’s resolve to act decisively against those who prioritise profit over public safety.

He noted that the destruction exercise was a crucial part of NAFDAC’s market control strategy to ensure only safe and quality products reach consumers.

“We will enhance surveillance and bring violators to justice,” Agada affirmed, while assuring the public of NAFDAC’s efforts to strengthen its regulatory frameworks and uphold product quality standards.
