Naira abuse: Policeman in viral video with Okoya's sons detained for misconduct

Nigerians on social media platforms have called for the immediate arrest of the sons of Lagos billionaire and industrialist, Chief Rasaq Okoya, following allegations of naira abuse.

A viral video which trended on Wednesday, showed Okoya’s sons misusing the naira. In response, the Nigerian police released a statement on Friday, stating that the police officer seen in the video have been identified and will face disciplinary action.

Force Spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi stated that disciplinary action would be taken against the police officer involved. However, he made no mention of any arrests or actions against Chief Okoya’s sons, who were seen in the video misusing the naira.

Adejobi wrote: “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of the Lagos businessman, Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action.

“The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police. Thanks.”

The statement sparked widespread criticism, with many Nigerians accusing the authorities of treating the billionaire’s sons as though they are above the law.

An X user, Nejeeb Bello Oyarese who identifies as #NejeebBello questioned, “What about the sons of Chief Okoya who were actually abusing the Naira? Have they been arrested and detained while charges are being put forward against them?”

IRUNNIA who tweets as #Irunnia_ said, “The sons of Chief Okoya abused money and they were not punished. It was the policeman standing on his own that was punished. Omo Davido was right. In this life, have money or you go suffer.”

Amb. Dr. Stephen O. Enike-Matthew with the username #sir_enike added, “What about prosecuting the children in that video for abuse of Naira and misuse of privileges in their treatment towards that police officer; who was only doing his job?”

The outrage extended to Facebook, where user Ozoemena Nwatu commented, “Hope the police have equally detained the actual culprit, I mean the sons of the businessman?”

Another user, Alp OG, expressed frustration, “This IG must be crazy and leaving deceit life, how can they arrest the police man that was protecting the perpetrator, instead of the perpetrators themselves, is it because their father is a billionaire, this is the most stupid thing so far, police have been reduced to nothing by the same people in charge, what an irony..”

“Okay, wat of the billionaire sons, did u detain Dem too? Abi Dem dey untouchable?

Yeye dey smell,” Junior Ejemen Lee Philip added.

Ajibola Ayokunnu Ishola echoed similar sentiments, “Wait! Who abuse money who dem detained?? Detain those two kids and I’ll know you mean business. Abi no be someone deployed the police there to go and be standing like mannequin?? Over my living body lol.”
