Manchester United don’t have a bottomless wallet this summer, so it was a surprise to see us linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen over the past week.

It’s one of those links you fear is being pushed for one reason – to increase clicks and engagements.

The reason I think that is Osimhen would cost United north of £100m this summer. He has been heavily linked with a move elsewhere for over a year, and we’ve got several problematic areas to address before we spend the majority – if not all – of the transfer kitty on one player.

Osimhen has been linked with clubs like Chelsea, but a report from CalcioNapoli24 in the past week stressed that United are very much in the race for his signature.

The Reds were being tipped with offering Rasmus Hojlund plus cash to sign the 25-year-old goalscorer.

It would be a harsh move for Hojlund, who we hope can continue his promising development as a United player next season.

However, Football Italia claims Napoli have not received any ‘concrete bids’ for the Nigerian.

Osimhen is facing the prospect of being sold by the Italian club, with new head coach Antonio Conte ‘prepared’ to part company with him.

The Nigeria international scored 17 goals in all competitions last season and he could be the ideal partner for Hojlund. It just seems very unlikely to happen this summer.

It is understood that Osimhen’s preference is to move to a Premier League club this summer.
