Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State
The Nasarawa State Government has commenced the distribution of monetary support to traders who were affected by the recent fire outbreaks in the Lafia, Akwanga and Masaka markets in the state.
The President, Nasarawa State Traders and Marketers Association, Musa Turaki-Gamji made the disclosure while speaking with journalists in Lafia, the state capital on Saturday.
While explaining that the exercise kicked off on Friday across the affected markets in the state, Turaki-Gamji expressed deep appreciation to Governor Abdullahi Sule for coming to the aid of traders whose goods worth millions of Naira were burnt to ashes during the fire outbreak.
He noted that Sule, during a visit to the markets to see the level of damage done by the inferno, had promised to extend humanitarian assistance to the affected victims.
He, therefore, said the governor, being a man who keeps to his words, immediately began the process of approving the funds which are now being distributed to the traders as a way to assist them set up their businesses again.
“Governor Abdullahi Sule has redeemed his pledge to extend his support to the traders whose shops were affected by the fire incidents, and I want to sincerely appreciate him for the kind gesture.
“I appeal to the traders to use the money judiciously in order to revive their businesses. The state government has come up with several initiatives to prevent the reoccurrence of fire outbreaks in our markets, so I urge all traders to give the government the needed support in protecting our markets from such disasters,” he added.
Turaki-Gamji further expressed gratitude to the numerous politicians and good-spirited individuals who rendered their assistance to the association and prayed for God’s blessings upon their lives.
He also commended the efforts of the Commissioner of Trade, Industry and Investment, Mohammed Ottos; his predecessor, Abubakar Zanwa and the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Market Management Bureau, Yakubu Ubangari, for all the support they gave to the association since the fire incidents broke out.
PUNCH Online reports that one of the beneficiaries who spoke on behalf of the others, Alhaji Kutu thanked the Nasarawa State Government for the gesture and promised to put the money they received into good use.
Meanwhile, observation by our correspondent indicates that most of the markets in the state including the Lafia Main Market are overstretched, leading to the proliferation of illegal stalls.
The markets have slim-sized access roads for customers and vehicles, therefore serious action needs to be taken to address future unforeseen situations in the business environment.
