Nasarawa lawmaker seeks solutions to rising insecurity in constituency

The House of Representatives member for Akwanga, Nassarawa-Eggon, and Wamba federal constituency in Nasarawa State, Jeremiah Umaru has lamented the increasing rate of insecurity in the area while also calling for urgent action from the stakeholders and residents to tackle the menace.

The lawmaker raised the alarm in the Akwanga Local Government of the state on Thursday during a peace and security summit he organised, aimed at finding a lasting solution to the security challenges in the area.

Umaru, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress further explained that the summit was also aimed at complementing the efforts of the Federal, State, and Local Governments to ensure that the people live in peace and harmony despite their diverse interests and believes.

He said, “Security is not just the responsibility of the government and the security agencies alone, but a collective responsibility, that was why I came up with the initiative to bring my constituents together.

“The summit is part of my contributions to create a platform where people of diverse culture, religion as well as political interest in the area can come together to discuss as brothers and sisters irrespective of their differences.

“As their representative at the National Assembly, I promise to continue to initiate programmes and sponsor quality bills and motions that would help to address the challenges confronting them.”

Speaking on the recent issues of flooding in some parts of the state, Jeremiah Umaru called on his constituents to always report early signs capable of causing flooding and other emergencies to the appropriate authorities for prompt action to prevent disasters.

On his part, the North-Central Director of the National Emergency Management Agency, Bashir Idris-Garna who was a resource person at the event, tasked the people to adopt non-violent approach towards addressing conflict.

He explained that communication plays an important role in promoting peace and unity, adding that the absence of it brings suspicions, thereby serves as a security threat.

He therefore, urged residents of the area to embrace each other and respect the believes and interests of one another as a prerequisite for ensuring peaceful coexistence in the society.

Earlier, the Chun Mada and Chairman, Traditional Council of Akwanga LG, Samson Gamu-Yare, appreciated the lawmaker for the initiative to ensure peace and unity through robust engagement with the critical stakeholders.

The royal father further assured that the traditional rulers would continue to play their roles in ensuring that the state remained peaceful.

Our correspondent reports that the meeting had in attendance, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Yakubu Kwanta, representatives of the Aren Eggon and Sarkin Wamba, Districts Heads, Village Heads, Ward Heads, Student groups, Market women, and traders, among others.
