Members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Nasarawa State have elected the immediate past secretary of the party, Adamu Bako as chairman.
His emergence followed the party’s congress which was held in Lafia, the state capital on Tuesday.
Chairman of the PDP National Committee in charge of the party’s congress in the state, Senator Simon Mwadkwon, made the disclosure after the elections which saw the victory of Bako as the state’s party chairman.
He praised the fairness of the process and encouraged party members to unite under Bako’s leadership.
Senator Mwadkwon further urged unity among the contestants and other members of the party, emphasising that the PDP remains a big family.
“We had a very successful and credible congress. In the contest, the is no victor or vanquish. Whoever has emerged today is coming to serve the people. I therefore wish to appeal that anyone who has contested in this congress should accept the results.
“We have a total of 1,414 people that went through accreditation, and two people contested for the chairmanship position.
“The first person is Adamu Bako who got 1,403 votes, while Matthew John scored seven votes, and we have four invalid votes.
“Adamu Bako is hereby declared as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Nasarawa State,” he said.
Our correspondent reports that other contestants who were elected during the congress include Keffas Danlami as Secretary, Yahaya Bunu as Treasurer, Chinenege Muhammed as State Publicity Secretary, and Hanatu John as State Women Leader.
Bala Aron was elected as State Legal Adviser and Awesu Abdullahi as State Auditor.
Those elected as Vice-Chairpersons for the state’s three senatorial zones include Marshin Shema (North), Isah Bala Mangi (South), and Attahiru Osu Audu (West).
In his first speech as chairman, Bako expressed gratitude to the entire PDP members in the state for their unity and commitment in ensuring that they come out en mass to elect new leaders into office to move the party to greater heights.
He noted that the newly elected leaders under his leadership would focus on the PDP’s cohesion and strengthening of the party’s presence across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Our duty is to reach out to members who may feel aggrieved so that we can work together as one family. I want to congratulate our PDP family for coming together with one voice to elect the new leaders,” he added.
Earlier, the PDP’s 2023 governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Emmanuel Ombugadu praised the conduct of the congress, while describing the process as free and fair.
