Neal Maupay is leaving Everton for Marseille and he is not hiding how delighted he is to be moving on from Goodison Park.

The Frenchman moved to Everton from Brentford in 2022 and scored just once in 29 appearances in his first season with the Toffees.

He spent most of last campaign on loan back at Brentford but returned to Goodison Park in the summer, being an unused substitute in the first two Premier League games of the season.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that the 28-year-old has agreed a move to Marseille, with the French club signing him on loan with an obligation to buy.

Maupay replied to that news with a clip from The Shawshank Redemption which saw lead character Andy Dufresne emotionally celebrating his escape from prison.

While there was no caption accompanying the video, it didn’t take great detective skills to suggest Maupay is thrilled to be leaving Everton for his home country.

A video emerged at the weekend of Everton players boarding a train in London after their 4-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Some Toffees fans were waiting for the players at the platform and screamed abuse at them as they approached the carriages.

One person was heard to shout: ‘F*** off, you f***ing rat. F***ing 80 grand a week? You f***ing w****r.’

Maupay wrote on X: ‘Imagine another job where it’s normalised to get abuse like this.

‘Hanging around at a train station to scream at men who are trying their best…’

Manager Sean Dyche said of Maupay after the incident: ‘He’s had a real tough run at Everton Football Club. They know that, he knows that, so we’ll have to wait and see if something new comes for him or if he can stay here and see what he can give us.’
