Neil Lennon has poured cold water on rumours linking Celtic with a move for Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen and claimed he ‘wouldn’t even get in the team’.

Eriksen has been linked with a move over the border ahead of the January transfer window as Celtic look to strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

Celtic have thrived since Rodgers’ return in the summer of 2023, winning the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup last season and pulling four points clear at the top of the table this term.

Rodgers is said to be keen to bring Denmark international Eriksen to Celtic Park but former manager Lennon ‘cannot see’ that deal happening and doubts the player would even get in the team.

Eriksen has made 86 appearances for Manchester United over the past three-and-a-half seasons but looks set to see his game-time reduced under new boss Ruben Amorim, known for his high-intensity and pressing style of play.

That could lead to Eriksen looking for a move elsewhere but Lennon does not think he will end up at Celtic, especially given the wages he will be on at Old Trafford.

‘With the talent Celtic have at their disposal at the moment, I’m not sure that Christian Eriksen would get into the team,’ Lennon told BoyleSports.

‘He is a classy player and always has been, but I’m not sure who he would come in to replace. You’d have to consider the wages he’d want as well.

‘I can’t see it happening and I’m not sure it would suit the club at the moment.’

Lennon is a legend at Celtic, lifting five Scottish Premiership titles at the club as a player and the same number as a manager.

Looking back on his time in charge, the 53-year-old revealed he was ‘very close’ to bringing England striker Ivan Toney to the club before he signed for Brentford in 2020.

‘The one that got away at Celtic was Ivan Toney, unfortunately he ended up going to Brentford,’ Lennon added.

‘We had a lot of discussions and even had him at the training ground, we were very close to getting him but it wasn’t meant to be.

‘He’d have torn up the division and you can see that by looking at what he has gone on to do.’
