Neil Warnock leaves England for dream job with side that previously rejected him

Neil Warnock is set to return to management again with his first job outside of England and Wales.

The 75-year-old is in talks with Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen, and could be in the dugout for a clash away at Rangers on Tuesday.

Warnock has been out of work since parting ways with Huddersfeild in September 2023, and was linked to the Sheffield Wednesday job.

However, he will now head to Scotland for the first time following the dismissal of Barry Robson.

Aberdeen surprisingly drew 1-1 with league-leaders Celtic last time out under the guidance of first team coach Peter Leven, and now travel to second-place Ibrox.

Warnock has previously stated his desire to manage in Scotland, telling Sky Sports: “I’ve always wanted to have a go at Celtic or Rangers.

“I love Rangers and am a Rangers fan down here, only because Ally McCoist, Rangers, and me and him against Alan Brazil, who's mad Celtic. I remember going to Celtic when Gordon Strachan was there, he invited me into the office, great day.

"The passion, Celtic and Rangers fans. But I have always thought the same about the Edinburgh clubs, Nick Montgomery is one of my former players and now managing Hibernian, so I hope they do really well.”

Warnock went on to reveal that he did in fact once apply for the Aberdeen job, the role he is now set to take.

He continued: "I remember applying for the Aberdeen job and never got a reply. I remember asking one of my ex-players who was at Aberdeen what it's like up there. He went 'gaffer, it's the only place the Seagulls never land!

"Coldest place on earth! But I never got a reply but you just don't know what is around the corner. I am fascinated by challenges and if there is another one after Christmas, I will take it onboard."

Warnock is perhaps best known for his record of the most promotions in English football with eight, and the most games as a manager, with 1626, a total he now looks set to add to.
