Nemanja Matic has been linked with a shock return to the Premier League with Ipswich Town eyeing up a move, according to reports.
Matic departed England in 2022 when he swapped Manchester United for Roma, with the Serbian midfielder currently playing for Lyon in France.
The 36-year-old played a total of 189 games for the Red Devils over a five-year spell, which started in 2017, when he was signed by Jose Mourinho.
Matic also featured under Mourinho at Chelsea, where he played a total of 154 matches for the Blues and helped them clinch two top-flight trophies.
Ipswich are now hoping to bring Matic to Portman Road with their manager Kieran McKenna thought to be keen on a possible transfer.
But according to Sky in Germany, Ipswich are not the only side aiming to land Matic, who has also attracted interest from multiple Italian clubs.
Como, Napoli, and Fiorentina have been linked to Matic, who is under contract with French club Lyon until 2026.
Ipswich boss McKenna will hope his existing relationship with Matic can help to secure a deal in January.
The pair know each other from their together at Old Trafford when McKenna was working as an assistant manager to Mourinho.
Should Ipswich win the race to sign Matic, it would give them a major boost in their quest to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The Tractor Boys are 18th in the top-flight table after 20 games played, level on points with Wolves, who are above them on goal difference.
Ipswich were only promoted to the Premier League last season with a second-placed finish in the Championship.
The Sussex-based club, famously supported by singer Ed Sheeran, return to Premier League action on Thursday as they host Brighton.
