The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency and the Ondo State Government have announced a collaborative initiative focused on the technical standardisation, inspection, and testing of electrical
installations and equipment.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by NEMSA’s Head of Communications and Protocol, Mrs Ama Umoren, on Friday.
According to the statement, the initiative stemmed from a virtual meeting held on Monday, bringing together officials from both entities.
NEMSA, established under the NEMSA Act of 2015 (now subsumed under the Electricity Act 2023), is responsible for enforcing technical standards and regulations to ensure a safe and reliable electricity supply across Nigeria.
The agency’s mandate includes the inspection and certification of electrical installations and equipment to safeguard lives and property within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive of NEMSA, Aliyu Tahir, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “This is a positive development aimed at fostering mutual cooperation between the federal government-owned agency and the Ondo State government.”
He emphasised that the initiative is critical for ensuring the safety and standardisation of electrical installations within the state.
Leading the Ondo State delegation, Tunji Light conveyed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s appreciation for the partnership, saying, “This meeting will result in a strong collaborative effort to ensure the safety of lives and property in the state.”
Light also highlighted ongoing projects in the state that require collaboration with NEMSA and expressed the commitment of the Ondo State Electricity Regulatory Bureau to work harmoniously with the agency.
He further suggested the establishment of a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise the collaboration, noting,
“This can serve as a template for other state governments to emulate.”
In response, Tahir expressed optimism that the partnership would improve operations in the power sector.
The meeting concluded with plans to form a joint team, comprising members from both NEMSA and the Ondo State government, tasked with identifying areas for potential collaboration.
Tahir added that the partnership marks a significant step toward efficient electricity management in Ondo State, with the goal of providing a safe and reliable power supply for its residents.
