The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has unveiled the customer bill of rights and obligations for customers within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.
The newly introduced framework, guided by the Electricity Act 2023, outlines key rights of consumers, including access to reliable and quality electricity, accurate billing, complaint resolution, contract clarity, data privacy, and protection from unfair practices.
A statement made available to our correspondent by an official of NERC on Thursday said, “Customers are also entitled to clear information about electricity rates, terms of service, and procedures for connection.
“To ensure an efficient electricity supply system, the bill also highlights obligations that customers must fulfill. These include timely payment of bills, providing access for meter installation and maintenance, ensuring safety compliance, and reporting unauthorised use or meter tampering.”
The statement further advised consumers to notify their respective distribution companies (DisCos) before vacating or occupying a premises to avoid liability for unpaid bills.
“NERC emphasised that the customer protection regulations were designed to align Nigeria’s electricity service standards with international best practices.
“The commission urged consumers to be aware of their rights and responsibilities to foster a more transparent and accountable electricity market,” it added.
