Netflix is about to make its Broadway producing debut, joining the team of Peter Morgan‘s upcoming play Patriots.
The play from the creator of the Netflix signature series The Crown arrives on Broadway April 1 for a 12-week engagement following a record-breaking run at London’s Almeida Theatre and a sold-out 12-week West End transfer at the Noël Coward Theatre. Opening night at Broadway’s Ethel Barrymore Theatre is April 22.
The play is set in 1991 after the fall of the Soviet Union and chronicles the rise of oligarchs like billionaire Boris Berezovsky (Michael Stuhlbarg) and a little-known deputy mayor of St. Petersburg named Vladimir Putin (Will Keen). When an eventual successor to President Boris Yeltsin is needed, Berezovsky turns to Putin, whose ruthless rise threatens Berezovsky’s reign and sets off a confrontation between the two powerful, fatally flawed men.
Netflix’s participation was announced in a press release today about the completed casting of the large ensemble. In addition to Netflix, producers include Sonia Friedman Productions, Nederlander Presentations, Richard Winkler, Stephanie P. McClelland, Ted Snowdon, Jamie deRoy/Ken Greiner, and Richard Batchelder.
Sonia Friedman Productions and Netflix recently teamed up as producers of the London stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
In addition to the previously announced Stuhlbarg, Keen and, as oligarch and politician Roman Abramovich, Luke Thallon, the 18-member Broadway cast will include Stella Baker, Ronald Guttman, Alex Hurt, Rosie Benton, Jeff Biehl, Peter Bradbury, Camila Canó-Flaviá, Marianna Gailus, Paul Kynman, Adam Poss and Nick Rehberger. Understudies are Benjamin Bonenfant, Danielle Chaves, Joe Forbrich and Tony Ward.
The creative team for Patriots features set designer Miriam Buether, co-costume designers Deborah Andrews and Miriam Buether, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer and composer Adam Cork, projection designer Ash J Woodward and movement director Polly Bennett.
