The red carpet premiere of Netflix’s XO, Kitty Season 2 has been canceled in the wake of the Los Angeles wildfires that broke out over a week ago, the latest in a string of premiere red carpets, awards nominations and other Hollywood events to be nixed or postponed as the multiple blazes leveled neighborhoods, displaced tens of thousands and killed two dozen people.
The sophomore season of the K-drama, coming of age show, which is a spinoff of the streamer’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before films, debuts Thursday, Jan. 16. Jenny Han, author of the trilogy of books in which readers and eventual viewers first met Anna Cathcart’s Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey, posted on Instagram in tribute to the canceled premiere as well as to the devastation in L.A.
“Tonight was supposed to be the premiere for season two of XO, Kitty, but sadly we’re all at home with heavy hearts for LA. My heart is broken for the city that’s already been through so much in the past few years, and especially for everyone who has lost their communities and homes in the fires,” Han, who served as an Executive Producer on Season 2 wrote. “Truthfully it feels strange to post at a time like this, but I would be remiss not to acknowledge the hard work our amazing cast, our showrunner @jessica.otoole, our crew, and so many others put into this season. I’m excited for you to watch it, and I hope it can bring you some comfort and joy this week.”
Han and her co-showrunner Sascha Rothchild as well as all of the show’s writers for the first season also had to miss that red carpet premiere because the event coincided with the beginning of the Writers Guild of America strike in 2023.
Jessica O’Toole serves as showrunner for Season 2. Han created the spinoff series, which she executive produces with Matt Kaplan of ACE Entertainment. Season 2 welcomes some new faces like Philippe Lee, Audrey Huynh, Sasha Bhasin and Joshua Lee, who join returning stars Cathcart (Kitty), Minyeong Choi (Dae), Gia Kim (Yuri), Sang Heon Lee (Min Ho), Anthony Keyvan (Q), Regan Aliyah (Juliana), Peter Thurnwald (Alex) and Jocelyn Shelfo (Madison).
