WWE has a long list of banned words, moves, and in-ring actions. Recently, the piledriver has resurfaced in conversation after Kevin Owens used the once-banned move on Randy Orton during an episode of WWE SmackDown.
Mark Henry, who was watching WWE closely, weighed in on the situation after Owens performed the piledriver. Orton had to be stretchered out, and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes even accompanied him in the ambulance.
On Busted Open Radio, Mark Henry commented on the situation. Henry stated that the fine from WWE has to be at least $50k, and that could open the door to even more drama later on.
“I think that they should say, if you do it, it’s gonna be a $50,000 fine. When I was a kid, the DDT was the thing because… You remember playing wrestling? ‘I’m Jake The Snake, I got the DDT’ – ‘No no no, you can’t have it, I got it’. Because everybody knew, what’s gonna happen when you take the Jake The Snake DDT? It’s over. I don’t wanna see the Piledriver become, again, like a DDT or a Superkick. You know what I wanna see? I wanna see somebody say, ‘Hey, I got 50 grand burning a hole in my pocket. (I’m gonna) Piledrive your ass’.”
Mark Henry knows what he’s talking about when it comes to pro wrestling business. His son, Jacob Henry, recently signed with WWE’s NIL program. Jacob is also pursuing a college degree and a wrestling career at the University of Oklahoma, continuing his father’s legacy into the next generation.
The piledriver has a long history in WWE, dating back to when Jerry “The King” Lawler popularized it as his knockout move. The move became restricted after Owen Hart’s piledriver on “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at SummerSlam 1997 caused Austin’s neck injury. Since then, only Undertaker and Kane’s tombstone piledrivers have been allowed.
It remains to be seen if WWE will address the piledriver again, but Kevin Owens’ recent use of the move has certainly reignited debate. We will have to see if WWE lays down any hefty fines in the future for breaking that rule.
