After the heated controversy caused by the match between Argentina and Morocco in the men’s Olympic tournament, it is now the turn of the women’s team to make headlines.
The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced today that Bev Priestman, Canada’s women’s team coach, has been suspended for cheating.
The 38-year-old coach has been relieved of her duties in favour of her assistant, Andy Spence, who will take charge of the women’s national Olympic team until the end of the competition.
The reason? Bev Priestman is said to have encouraged her staff to use a drone to film the training of New Zealand, their first opponent beaten (2-1) in the first round of the group stage on Thursday.
“Over the past 24 hours, additional information has been brought to our attention regarding the past use of drones against opponents, prior to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In light of these new revelations, Canada Soccer has taken the decision to suspend coach Bev Priestman for the remainder of the Olympic Games, and until the conclusion of our recently launched independent internal investigation.”we can read in a press release from the COC.
