Newcastle City Council announce decision to avoid even worse traffic chaos on Tuesday night


 
 
 
 
 
 

AFC Wimbledon are the visitors on Tuesday night at St James’ Park.

The Wombles forced by flooding to move their ‘home’ cup match the best part of 300 miles north.

Amazingly, many Newcastle United members were left disappointed, as despite short notice and this a game against, with all due respect, fourth tier opposition, the ballot was seriously oversubscribed. Then the sale of thousands of tickets via the queue system (as NUFC do with all home matches now) the next morning, saw those also snapped up within minutes, the vast majority who had joined the queue left unlucky.

As for AFC Wimbledon, on Monday afternoon they have revealed that over 1,400 of their 3,000 tickets have been sold so far, their fans having until 5pm today to buy the remaining ones.

Another very busy match ahead at St James’ Park.

Which as so many Newcastle United fans know, also means a very busy night getting to and from the game, especially if you are needing to head back over the river.

This made so much worse by the ongoing Tyne Bridge work, which has meant single lane each way, total nightmare.

That nightmare could have ended up so much worse on Tuesday night but luckily Newcastle City Council seeing sense.

On Monday afternoon they have announced (see below) that whilst this week the Tyne Bridge will shut totally to traffic from 8pm on a night to 6am the next morning.

On Tuesday night they are now going to delay this, so the Tyne Bridge will stay open until 11.30pm.

Newcastle City Council announcement – 30 September 2024:

‘After another amazing Great North Run, it’s time for the famous sign to come down.

To do this safely, the Tyne Bridge will be closed overnight from tonight for four nights, from 8pm until 6am, except Tuesday when the closure will be from 11.30pm due to the football match.’
