Newcastle are interested in Chelsea defender Axel Disasi according to The Athletic as they work on alternative targets incase a deal can’t be agreed for Marc Guehi.

The Magpies are yet to get going in the transfer market and have only signed Lloyd Kelly, John Ruddy, William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos, with deadline day fast approaching.

Guehi has been identified as their prime target, but they have so far been unable to reach an agreement with Palace for the England international and have had multiple bids rejected.

The Eagles are thought to value the 24-year-old at around £65-£70m, a figure Newcastle are seemingly yet to meet and they were handed a potential blow in their pursuit on Tuesday evening.

It was reported that Fulham had agreed a deal in principle with Palace for centre back Joachim Andersen, who started all 38 Premier League games last season.

Whilst this doesn’t mean Guehi won’t leave it’s seemingly unlikely that the Eagles would allow their first choice centre back pairing of last season to leave in the same window with little time left to replace them.

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has reported that Newcastle have stepped up work on alternative targets in case a deal can’t be agreed and are in interested in Chelsea star Disasi and Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.

Disasi only joined Chelsea last summer from Monaco and featured regularly under Mauricio Pochettino, with the Frenchman making 44 appearances in all competitions as the Blues secured a top six finish.

The 26-year-old underwent surgery on a hernia issue over the summer and didn’t feature at all in pre-season and wasn’t in the squad for last weekend’s defeat to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

It appears that after just one season he could be surplus to requirements in west London and he seemingly doesn’t suit the way Enzo Maresca wants to play and it will be interesting to see if Newcastle advance on their interest.
