Newcastle United are reportedly aiming to sign one of Jarrod Bowen or Michael Olise this summer ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United.
Though not as impressive as last season, this was still a very good campaign for Newcastle who finished seventh in the table, securing qualification for the Conference League unless United win Saturday’s FA Cup final.
The Magpies plan to continue backing Eddie Howe in the upcoming transfer window, though it is acknowledged that they will need to sell first in order to comply with profit and sustainability rules.
Their top priority is a new right-winger and to that end, the Telegraph report that Bowen and Olise are on a ‘very short list of targets’.
West Ham’s Bowen is viewed as the more attainable signing given the huge interest in Olise following a stellar season with Crystal Palace where he scored 10 goals and made six assists despite starting just 14 games.
United in particular are very keen on the £60million-rated 22-year-old though he is currently very happy at Selhurst Park.
It is said that the interest in Bowen is ‘long-standing’ and the 27-year-old is ‘universally admired’ at St. James’ Park having come close to moving their from Hull in 2020 when Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce were in charge.
Instead he went to the London Stadium, where he has gone onto record 60 goals and 39 assists in 202 appearances, helping the Irons consistently qualify for Europe and score the winner in the Conference League final in 2023.
30 goal contributions this season has earned Bowen a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2024, and earned plenty of admirers not least Liverpool who could look to the Three Lions star to replace Mohamed Salah.
Given his ability and his contract which doesn’t expire until until 2030, prizing the winger away from East London would be difficult, with around £60m expected to be the fee for the player, but the Magpies will explore whether a deal can be done.
They are also looking at signing Arsenal and England’s outcasted goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale as well as Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Though the Toffees star has struggled with injuries he is greatly admired and Howe is in need of a new back-up No.9 to Alexander Isak given that Callum Wilson is expected to leave for the Saudi Pro League.
A move for the 27-year-old could be relatively cheap given his contract is up next summer and Everton are still in financial difficulty.
