Alexander Isak has distanced himself from rumours of a potential move to Arsenal or Tottenham in the summer, insisting he ‘feels at home’ at Newcastle and wishes to see out Eddie Howe’s ‘project’.
Reports this week suggested both Arsenal and Spurs would attempt to lure Isak to north London with eye-watering £100million bids to sign the 24-year-old forward at the end of the season.
Isak has scored 29 goals in 59 games since joining Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a club-record £63million deal in 2022 and is regarded as one of the finest young strikers in Premier League football, despite struggling with injury problems this term.
However, Newcastle manager Howe has stressed that Isak is not for sale and it’s understood the Magpies have the Sweden international at the forefront of their plans as they look ahead to the future.
‘He’s an outstanding talent and no-one connected with Newcastle would want to lose him,’ Howe told reporters when quizzed on the incessant speculation surrounding Isak’s future ahead of Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Everton.
‘I thought he was excellent against West Ham. He didn’t score in open play but his two penalties were outstanding and his general play was very good.
‘His link play, his athleticism, he looked in a really good place.’
Isak, who has over four years remaining on his current contract at St James’ Park, is determined not to let the rumours over his future prove a distraction, with the Toon pushing for European football again this season.
Asked if he agreed with Howe’s suggestion that he would be staying on beyond the end of the season, Isak told the i: ‘Yeah, of course I want to be here in the future.
‘I came here for the project, I absolutely love playing here, I really feel at home.
‘I want to finish this season in a good way for me and the team. I love playing here.’
Pressed on whether his future could hinge on Newcastle’s success in qualifying for Europe, Isak replied: ‘I don’t want to entertain these type of questions and rumours.
‘It’s not my position. I love playing, we have important games, there’s no focus there [on my future].
‘I just want to do good for the team.’
Isak is hopeful that Newcastle can return to winning ways at Fulham this weekend after a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty cancelled out the Swede’s opener at home to Everton on Tuesday evening.
‘We want Europe, that’s our target,’ he added.
‘We want to end up as high as possible, so we have to be positive in that respect.
‘We have to keep winning games and we’ll see which place is available.’
