Newcastle now have the upper hand heading into next month's return leg at St. James' Park.
It is also the first time they have been Arsenal in the competition at the fifth time of asking.
Guimaraes missed the match, though, as he served a one-match yellow card suspension after picking up two yellow cards in earlier rounds.
The Brazilian midfielder was still watching on at home whilst his teammates claimed victory in north London.
Footage of Guimaraes celebrating the victory was soon shared to social media after full-time.
In the video, he can be seen dancing and chanting 'Newcastle' whilst holding his young son.
The 27-year-old is free to return from his suspension against Bromley in the FA Cup on Sunday and is expected to feature in the second leg against Arsenal on February 5.
It was all smiles in the Guimaraes household but teammate Dan Burn has admitted the tie is far from over despite Newcastle's two-goal first leg victory.
Speaking after the match, Burn told Sky Sports: "Very proud, it was always going to be like that in the second half.

"To a man everyone defended brilliantly. To get a result here you need to defend set-pieces, but I thought everyone was brilliant.
"We have had a sticky patch, but we have had a few clean sheets in a row. Seeing the way we defended in the second half was brilliant.
"It's only a job half done - they have nothing to lose coming to St. James' Park."
Newcastle previously reached the Carabao Cup final under Howe two seasons ago, losing to Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.
On that occasion, they followed a 1-0 first leg win at Southampton with a 2-1 home victory in the last four to reach the final.
A repeat against Arsenal would set Howe's side up to end their 56-year wait for a major trophy.
Newcastle have not lifted silverware since winning the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969.
