The chances of Newcastle United playing Champions League football in the 2025/26 season have had a huge boost.

The events of Tuesday night tipping the odds even further in United’s favour, following on from the current run of thee Premier League wins in a row for NUFC.

The Champions League quarter-finals kicking off last night with Bayern Munich losing 2-1 at home to Inter Milan.

Whilst in North London, three goals in 17 second half minutes earned Arsenal a resounding 3-0 first leg victory over Real Madrid.

Most importantly…

That win for Arsenal also means that the Premier League has a fifth place in the Champions League now confirmed (see below) for next season.

It is now between La Liga and Serie A to see who gets the other bonus Champions League place.

This had been on the cards for a while but nice to see it confirmed. It would be just our luck to finish fifth in the Premier League but to have a total collapse of English clubs in Europe this season to deny us Champions League.

Still work to be done of course to ensure Newcastle United finish top five.

However, these last three wins and result elsewhere, have put United in such a strong position, as you can see from the current (9 April 2025) Premier League table.

Premier league table 8 April 2025

BBC Sport report – 8 April 2025:

‘England are guaranteed a minimum of five teams in the Champions League next season after Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of the quarter-finals.

One win, in any of the three European competitions, would have secured the fifth place for England.

Two extra spots are awarded to countries based on their ranking in Uefa’s coefficient table.

Liverpool and Arsenal look set to finish in the top in the Premier League, with Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Newcastle, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Brighton and Bournemouth, who sit 10th, all separated by 12 points.

England could have as many as seven teams in the Champions League in 2025-26 if Aston Villa win the competition this year, but fail to qualify through the Premier League, and if Manchester United or Tottenham win the Europa League.’
