Newcastle United to sell top scorer Harvey Barnes in January, to help fund new signings?

That has been a suggestion put forward with just over two months to go until the January 2025 transfer window opens.

Harvey Barnes has scored three Premier League goals this season, including key strikes against both Spurs and Wolves. Six points picked up in those 2-1 victories, representing half of the points total after eight PL matches.

Those three goals have come in just 411 minutes. means Harvey Barnes is averaging a goal every 137 PL minutes this season.

The winger having started four PL matches and off the bench in the other four. When you add his superb assist for Gordon’s equaliser at Bournemouth, it is actually a direct goal involvement every 103 PL minutes for Barnes this season.

Mirror journalist Simon Bird speaking to the Chronicle about Newcastle United, Harvey Barnes and the January transfer window – 23 October 2024:

“Now, Newcastle, one of the weird things about the transfers in the last couple of years is they had Anthony Gordon and then they signed Harvey Barnes as well.

“Why do that?

“Why spend that much money on two people in the same position?

“That’s what I didn’t quite understand other than Harvey Barnes is a good player.

“So if you’re looking to raise money, will someone take Harvey Barnes off you for £40 million – £45 million? And Newcastle make a profit on him?”

“He wants to be a main man…

“Now, I’m sure there are people in the Premier League who would be excited by that potential to sign Harvey Barnes.

“Can they create a market for him? I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know whether this is a club policy.

“This is me thinking, if you’re looking to cash in on an asset, raise money, and get a couple of big deals done, you’ve got to sell someone with that value.

“And Harvey Barnes, if he’s unhappy at what he’s getting, the opportunities he’s getting at Newcastle, which he probably is, because he thinks he should start, he might be the one.”

“I’m pretty sure Harvey Barnes is fairly unhappy at the minute in terms of not starting every game and not starting in his favourite position because we know his favourite position is left wing.

“If you are Harvey Barnes, you want to play and you’ve got the talent to play, and he’s scored goals this year.”

Whilst it is a conundrum as to how to regularly fit Harvey Barnes into this Newcastle United team, especially when Gordon and Isak are both fit and available. I think it would be crazy for Newcastle United to willingly sell a player who has such devastating stats in terms of scoring and creating goals, going all the way back through his Leicester career. Which is of course why Newcastle bought him.

Also, as we all know to our cost, Newcastle United can’t just rely on having a starting eleven staying fit. You just know for sure that if say United sold Harvey Barnes in January 2025, then next thing we would see some shock freak injury rule Anthony Gordon out for ages.

Newcastle United need to concentrate on keeping their best and most productive players, whilst getting what they can for lesser players who aren’t so productive. Which in the case of wingers and upcoming windows, surely should see Newcastle United trying all they can to sell Jacob Murphy and/or Miguel Almiron to help finance a new right wing first choice coming in, NOT selling Harvey Barnes.
